5 Ways to Keep You on Track to Success
January 1st brings new goals and the motivation to start them, but as the months go by motivation tends to wear out. There are a lot of factors involved in this behavior, but it can be corrected by properly managing your efforts. It’s time to start strong and stay strong. These tips can help you build momentum and keep that momentum going all year long:
Have Goals, Not Resolutions
Don’t just write it on a piece of paper and forget about it. If there is something you want to achieve, make the changes you need to make to get to where you want to be. The difference between a goal and a resolution is that you’re actively managing your goals, tracking your progress, making things happen.
Set Yourself Up to Win
It can be really easy to be super aggressive with your goals but try not to go down that road. Make your goals S.M.A.R.T: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Based. What this means is just to be easy on yourself, and set goals you know you can achieve. Once you hit one, you’ll feel more motivated to hit the next one. Failing never made anyone feel good.
Make Room for Indulgence
You cannot be too strict with yourself because that is not sustainable. When it comes to nutrition, the idea is to build habits that become second nature to you. Being limited 100% of the time is never going to feel natural, and it’s eventually going to backfire. Allow your body to indulge and ideally, plan for it so your cravings don’t catch you off guard.
Enjoy What You’re Doing
If you don’t like what you do, you’re not going to stick with it long term. It’s not your fault, it’s how the body works. Give yourself a hand and do things you actually enjoy. Try new recipes that satisfy your nutritional needs and cravings, and exercise in a way that makes you feel good. If you’re just starting with this process, it might take some trial and error until you find what works best for you, but don’t give up, you’ll get there.
Focus on How Far You’ve Come
Personal wellness is a journey, not a destination. It might sound cliché but it’s true. Don’t be too hard on yourself when you think you still have a long way to go, instead look at how much you’ve achieved and enjoy the process.
