How’s that for a friendly, colorful reminder? Here we go!
Besides getting out in the fresh air and mingling with your fellow Coloradans, there are many benefits to doing your grocery shopping at the local farmers market instead of the chain grocery stores. In the quest for a healthy lifestyle, many of us don’t take advantage of one of the greatest assets to healthy eating: the fresh farmers’ market!
Reason’s to shop at farmer’s markets
If you want to taste real flavors try hitting up your local fresh market or farmers market. Colorado is swarming with them, so there’s really no excuse. You’ve probably passed one on your way to the Whole Foods. Next time, stop and take time to get to know your local produce farmers and taste some local produce. Ever wonder what a tomato is supposed to taste like, or strawberries? Go to the farmers market. Farmers’ market vendors have the unique ability to let the produce ripen fully in the field, bush or tree before it is brought directly to you. There’s no simulated ripening done because the fruits and veggies were picked before they were fully mature. There’s not accounting for long distance shipping or sitting in a storage area somewhere before hitting the shelves and the local grocery store. This also means that….
You only get the fruits and vegetables that are in season. If you’re all about the paleo diet then you should absolutely be “foraging” for food at the local farmers market. Seeing how the seasons affect our produce production will help you get in contact with your surroundings and your natural dietary needs. You’ll start to look forward to strawberry season, asparagus season and of course, pumpkin season. Shopping at farmers markets is the purest form of grocery shopping, plus you are supporting local family farmers who are struggling under the domination of the large agriculture business.
Knowing where your food comes from is the best way to be certain you are not filling your body with unwanted pesticides, hormones, antibiotics or the dreaded GMOs. Many local farmers will go to great lengths to keep their produce organic and sustainable.
